Free Video to Audio Converter is a program that extracts audio from video files into audio files.

Most video container formats store audio as well as video, but it is not necessarily a simple thing to extract that audio either to be used on its own or to be used for conversion elsewhere. Free Video to Audio Converter by DVDVideoMedia is freeware that simplifies these extraction and conversion processes for the average user. Users will not require much technical expertise.

Free Video to Audio Converter can extract audio from a wide range of container types: AVI, DAT, MOV, MPEG, RM/RMVB, VOB, WAV and WMV/ASF. By default, it can extract to OGG, MP3, WAV and MP3. It can also handle conversions for the extract to formats that it supports. If, for instance, you have a WAV that you would rather be in MP3, the program can handle that conversion for you.

The user interface is simplistic and intended to be user-friendly. You will encounter for main options: import audio, edit selected file, select audio type and convert audio. Selecting a profile—or audio type—is simply instructing the program what audio format you desire.

The add button lets you add items to convert or from which to extract. Free Video to Audio Converter supports batching, which means that you can add multiple files to a queue. This lets you set up many extractions and conversions and not have to wait around for each to finish. You do not have to be particular about adding to the queue because you can reprioritize after the fact.

You can also choose different settings—such as profile—for different files within the batch, and files can be set to extract into standalone files or be merged into one large file. The merging option is useful when, for instance, you are creating a custom audio file that will be added to a video conversion, such as extracting English audio track and adding that to an MP4 conversion.

Free Video to Audio Converter is no longer technically supported by DVDVideoMedia. Updates ended with Windows 8 and presumably Windows 8.1. It may work in Windows 10 in compatibility mode. It seems that this functionality has been rolled into a program called Free Video Converter. While it is understandable the developer may want to avoid redundancy, that program does not offer the same streamlined approach to audio extraction and conversion.
